From forth the loins of these two fatal foes A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life.
Introduction
Love at first sight. Jealousy. Betrayal. Drugs and Murder! Pop-culture today right? But these experiences are nothing new. Human nature has been the same throughout time – since before people could even write about it.
Shakespeare was a poet of great depth and beauty. His work has survived the test of time; it is still popular almost four hundred years after his death. For some unfortunate people, however, Shakespeare is a chore to read. They have difficulty understanding the English style that was used in his time, or they don’t think his work is relevant today. Some people even think Shakespeare plays are boring! They are truly missing out.
It will be your job to prove these doubters wrong! Show them that Shakespeare’s stories can be transferred to almost any time period, including the American Wild West, Mob-ridden 1920s Chicago, 1950s Suburbia, and the 1960s Hippie Counterculture.
This is the essential question you will think about as you participate in the project:
1. Why is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet called timeless?
Next Step: The Task
